Unity of Broward Spiritual Center

FAQs – Ministerial Transition & Financial Turning Point

MINISTRY LEADERSHIP

I have heard that the center will be led by co-ministers when Rev. Paul leaves. Who will that be and how long will that format last?

Following the retirement of Senior Minister Rev. Paul Tenaglia, which is effective September 1, Rev. Darby Mackenzie Line will continue in her current role until the end of her contract on December 31, 2026. She will also co-minister with Rev. Nicholas Gunn for the duration of his contract which is from September 1 through December 31, 2026.  They will serve as the Center’s co-ministers during this interim period.

The board will evaluate the ministry in November 2026 and determine contract renewals for 2027.

Without a Senior Minister, who will make decisions that a Senior Minister would make? Will it be a Board led ministry during the interim?

Yes; for the interim, the ministry will be led by the Board. Co-Ministers will report to the current Board.

When are we getting a new senior minister?

Following the advice and direction of Unity Communities and Leaders, during the transition period after our Senior Minister departs, the Board will work in conjunction with Rev. Darby Line and Rev. Nicholas Gunn, who will serve as co-ministers for our Spiritual Center until December 31, 2026. In November, the Board expects to review the transition plan and determine whether it should continue beyond December 31, whether a search for a Senior Minister should begin, or whether other leadership paths should be explored.

What conditions must be met before embarking on a Senior Minister search?

Revenue will be measured after the departure of Rev. Paul regarding funds available to hire a new Senior Minister, after which the Board will vote on whether/when to move forward with a search.

FINANCES

What is the purpose of the newly created Finance Committee?

The Board established a dedicated Finance Committee to analyze finances, manage interim expenses, and develop a strategic financial plan for the remainder of 2026 and beyond. Committee members are former Board Treasurers John Fitzgerald and Mark Anderson, Don Cook, Mary Pimenow, and current Treasurer, Wade Katros.

What is the basis of the $150K Reserve Fund goal discussed at the June Town Hall?

The sustainability analysis prepared by the board recommended that a minimum of $150K in cash savings would be required to bring the center up to a safe level of operations. The report’s results were presented to the community to emphasize the current financial crisis.

Can the center function and move forward on less than $150K in cash savings or reserves?

Yes; however, a one-month shortfall in revenue may force the center to default on operational obligations (such as salaries, music, electricity, etc.). There are no backup funds available if this occurs.

How will the Board raise much needed funds?

Based on recommendations from the finance committee, the board will be launching a campaign to raise much needed emergency funds for operational purposes, with a goal of cash savings that were maintained prior to the roof & AC replacement projects of 2025 (approx. $70K).

How will the emergency funds be used?

These funds will cover unanticipated shortfalls and will financially position Unity of Broward for sound, grounded decisions regarding the future of our home.

Why didn’t the Board tell the members sooner about our financial condition?

The Center’s financial condition was recently discussed at the annual meeting in February and at the Town Hall in April, in addition to Town Halls held in 2025 following the completion of the roof.  The financials are posted in the Sunday bulletin on the last Sunday of every month.

Why hasn’t the Board asked for help from Unity Headquarters?

The Board President and Treasurer reached out to Rev. Juan Herrera, President of the Unity Headquarters Board of Directors, initially to ask for guidance regarding the retirement of Rev, Paul Tenaglia as well as our financial situation. He provided us with a sense of peace and love as we navigate our Center’s future, and he referred us to Unity Communities and Leaders at Unity Headquarters.  The Board reached out to Unity Communities and Leaders in mid-March regarding the upcoming ministerial transition, and has been in constant contact with the Director of Unity Communities and Leaders since then.

Can Unity Headquarters provide financial assistance?

Unity Headquarters only provides limited financial assistance, mostly in the form of reimbursement for expenses associated with a ministerial search.

Can I direct my tithe to a specific category within the center’s budget – for example, operational expenses rather than building upkeep?

Yes. Speak to the current Board Treasurer to direct your tithe to the appropriate budget category.

How are our finances looking year-to-date?

YTD net income (January –June 2026) is -$1975. This amount fluctuates monthly during the high season which includes snowbirds.

We have seen a modest, encouraging increase in recurring monthly donations since the Town Hall Meeting. However, the Center will require a substantial increase of monthly revenue to be sustainable for the long term.

BUILDING SALE OPTIONS

Has the Board already decided to sell our property?

No. The Board is currently in a 90-day pause at the request of Unity Communities and Leaders. During the pause, we are prayerfully evaluating all options—whether to sell or remain in the current facility. Sale of the building is only one option.

What options are we pursuing?  (such as parceling the property, sale and lease back, etc.)

Too early to determine. However, several realtors have walked the property and provided speculative ideas.

What steps are we taking to prepare for a sale? (such as finding a realtor, getting an appraisal, etc.)

The Board has established several committees to research realtors, potential rental/purchase options, transition team, and a finance committee.

If we decide to sell, where will the money go/what will it be used for?

IRS rules require that sale proceeds be used for tax-exempt nonprofit purposes (like the continued operation of the ministry).  Proceeds cannot be distributed to individuals (i.e. to repay loans from individuals).

What were the determining factors that led to the decision to bring the building sale possibility to the community?

A sustainability analysis report indicated critical results. No funds are available in the event of an emergency.

Why did the Board enter into a 90-day pause before moving forward with a sale?

The Director of Unity Communities and Leaders evaluated the current conditions of the ministry after several meetings with our Board President, Board Treasurer, and several Board members, and determined that a pause or time of discernment was needed to reflect on our prosperity consciousness. At the conclusion of the 90-day pause (September 1, 2026), the Board and membership will re-evaluate the financial conditions and move to a vote on whether or not to sell the property.

What do the bylaws say about bringing a building sale to a vote?

According to our by-laws, “making decisions regarding the sale, pledge, or proposed financing of real property belonging to this ministry provided that all decisions concerning the sale, pledge, or proposed financing of real property exceeding twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) or twenty-five percent (25%) of the previous year’s income, whichever is greater, shall be presented to the membership at a properly constituted membership meeting for final approval.”
